Asking the Right Questions: Understanding ‘5W and 1H’ in English Language

In English language, there are a variety of ways you can ask the right questions when the situation demands. These questions usually begin with any of the 5 Ws or 1 H, i.e., what, why, when, where, who, and how. Together, these are commonly known as WH words or question words.

WH words or question words are used to ask about specific qualities, time, places, people and so on.

Let us take a look at the WH words and how they can be used 👇🏾

1. WHAT?

2. WHY?

3. WHEN?

5. WHO?

How can we form WH questions? 🤨

1. Using auxiliary/helping verbs

WH word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + ?

  • Why should we read newspapers?
  • When is he leaving?

2. Without using auxiliary/helping verbs

WH word + main verb + ?

  • Who won the tournament?
  • What happened to my parcel?
