Expansive Vocabulary can make your spoken and written English more powerful and effective, and can also help a lot in putting across your thoughts and ideas in exactly the way you intend to. Building a strong vocabulary is one of the easiest ways to improve your English language skills.

You can improve your vocabulary the same way you learn a new language, i.e., through reading, writing, listening, and speaking👇🏾
1. Reading 📚
Reading does not necessarily mean that you devour vocabulary words all the time. You are free to read any literary text in the language of your choice as long as you learn new words and phrases. You can even read blogposts where you come across new information as well as new terms that you don’t usually hear.
Bonus Tip: You can use daily word tools or look up new words to add one word to your vocabulary each day. You can also try downloading a daily word app like Daily Dictionary. The app sends you a new word to learn every day.

2. Writing 🖊️
Keep a notebook/diary for the sole purpose of writing down new words (and their meanings) that you come across while reading. You can then revisit these words whenever you want or are in need of! Actually using vocabulary can help it stick in your mind better. Write sentences with new words or compose a story using a group of words or expressions you’ve been learning.
Bonus Tip: You can even write down the synonyms and antonyms of the words you come across. Finding words with similar meanings that you can substitute for a commonly used word might provide you more options for expressing yourself.

3. Listening 👂🏾
Listening is how we first learn words (as children). It can profoundly impact how we learn to pronounce and use new words. You can listen to music/movies in the language you want to excel in, or hear podcasts and audio books. You can also listen to people conversing around you. The more you hear, the better your understanding of pronunciation becomes, and the more words you are able to add to your word bank!
Bonus Tip: Check out our article on Podcasts: Using English Podcasts to Improve Listening Skills which provides an amazing list of English podcasts you can hear to improve your listening skills.

4. Speaking 🗣️
Now that you’ve had the chance to learn as much as you could, you should put your learning to use by taking a test drive. You can either initiate conversations with fluent speakers, or join study groups/classes where you get to practice as much as possible.
Bonus Tip: Try conversing with people who can give you feedback and encourage you to keep learning. You can also join us at WhiZo. After all, practice is what makes us perfect!
